the one-two kick drum beat that starts “in the dark of the night” functions as a bit of a tease. instead of merely establishing the languid pace of the track, it has the power of suggestion, and its stark nakedness raises the question of what will happen after the music fully launches. a few seconds later, a punch-drunk, flanging keyboard is the first clue that the listener is in for an off-kilter ride, the sauntering bassline that next appears adds a springy, funk bounce. but it’s the tripped-out, multi-tracked vocals of fernando miranda rios, aka michoacan, the producer behind this slow reveal, that give the song its peculiar, space-yvibe. it’s like david byrne with funk aspirations and a vaguely cosmic feel. the b-side remix, courtesy of italy’s clap rules, feels like more of a re-build. the song has been taken apart and put back together with brand new parts. instead of more relaxed, dazed funk at the core, it’s a glittery, disco-ball splattered track with glossy keys all around.

spectrum recordings returns after the summer months with a fantastic deep dark two tracker to take us into those shorter nights of the year from italian duo ascion & davide carbone. the a side >shaved< is a stripped down dubby groover, with eerie vocal stabs and spacey edits. this has a seriously tripped out vibe, which is perfect for the after hours, but still with more then enough punch to work at peak time, with some layered percussion or effects. the flip side >spectral town< is a minimal funky track, superbly produced and once again perfect for the after hours. a very cool and classy record from a label stamping its mark on the scene, and still only in its first year of releasing music. look out for future releases from ramon tapia, gui boratto and alan fitzpatrick. big things to come!

paragraph number 3 delivers some deep, bass-heavy electronic funk on the a-side, with one note samba . grooving from the off-set, the percussive elements of the track wind around a solid and heavy sub bass, introducing dubbed-out horns reminiscent of slam s freelance science days. hypnotic and tripped out, slam return to their house roots.
on the aa room 2 , dedicated to one of the world s best clubs, fabric, where slam hold a residency, keeps with the stripped-down, rhythmic and gritty sound of paragraph. whilst constantly fluctuating echoes and delays control the rhythm of the track, a swirling, yet straight to the point synth creates some frenzied and panic-inducing builds throughout, leading to a wholesome and satisfying ride cymbal. room 2 is a killer, peak-time track that will be sure to induce some serious convulsions on dance-floor.

truffle music (toronto) returns with the voices (plant music) releasing their first e.p. isince 2005 and following up on the initial success of their sure thing/street commander eps on nycs plant music. cavern is a disco punk stomper that builds from the start with sizzling 4/4 live drums, bass, keys and a hypnotic subdued vocal that build to an apex only to break down and come back harder on the instrumental tip. spooky is a tripped out instrumental that is slower in tempo and heavy on the pychedelic. featuring all live instrumentation, this track takes you on a twisted journey. l.a.s woolfy (rong, permanent vacation) takes on the remix with his epic woolfy neu rave disco mix and he delivers just that with a speed up stormer that is over twice as long as the original and has a faint scent of old warehouse days but takes it forward with an interesting arrangement and eclectic instrumentation.

incl argy remix !! tokyo s rising star ryo murakami has already put his diverse, electronic sound on the map with the >rise< ep on dessous last year, and received great praise for his track >my soul<, snapped up by steve bug for the fabric mix series, which was piled high with atmosphere and dark, club energy. his next 12 includes two new tracks, the title cut being >down the sky<, cooly influenced by old school house, but also more recent european forays into night music. ryo demonstrates a heavy aptitude for stripped down futurism, with staccato, jilted beats, joined by layers of padded synth structures, looming somewhere between light and darkness. the b side, ‚coke‘ (no questions asked) welcomes another one of ryo‘s extended journeys, this time a stronger, peak time groove which never lets off, and builds around layers of spaced out, pitching fx. brain-tingling pitching synths heat things up, before laying down a super-funk hook that melts on top of the beats irresistibly. ryo then leads us head-first into a series of spac d out, jacked-up movements, characterised by risque, feminine vocal snippets. poker flat‘s young greek maestro, argy, creates a stunning hi-tech remix of ‚down the sky,‘ complete with mesmeric dub influenced chord stabs and tripped out washes of delay. once again carrying on the vibe of the original, but twisting it into an altogether different beast, argy takes ryo‘s warm synth stabs and shapes the remix into a slow paced yet pumping club tool.

promise land is a solid deep soulful groove created by koyla. the demo floated around the bombay itunes player for a few of weeks, we needed someone to tear this track up. we tried a couple of options it wasnt working this groove needed something killer. thats were good friend jrod indigo come into play, san fran neo soul singer decides to come into lovely vancouver to hang for a while at bombay studio hq, and thats were the story starts for this track. jrod writes and lays down his song and creates the promise land over koylas ripping hooks and players. everyone is diggin the direction, timmy comes in and throws in some backups, inhouse producers sean dimitrie and nav take all the parts and put together a b side. the awaaz mix takes the track into a late night bumping funky direction with ambient tripped out textures and hard detroit style chords. overall this is a classic style ep with a real organic disco avour, that will never die for us. koyla and jrod are true musicians and deserve the fullest respect in this genre.

next up from fear of flying we have pawas, originally from india and now based in cologne. pawas is currently in a bit of a groove on the production front with releases on adam krolls excellent squonk label and also with an ep forthcoming on germanys flash records with good friend daso. title track >playtex< is a twisting and turning groove through the deeper echelons of minimalism, very fx heavy with wibbles, whooshs and tripped out noises aplenty. one for the >hazy< moments on the dance floor with its hypnotic groove bound to lock them in until the early hours. >nylon< delivers a summertime injection in the form of an upliftingslice of niceness...

"dust science returns with fresh blood for 2007 on the faith is fear ep. weve been fans of fabrice lig for years her at dust. hes released an avalanche of great techno on classic labels such as kms, 7th city, fcomm and playhouse and hes done us produ with his first release for us. "access denied" is a surging, swinging, darkside monster thats relentlessly tricky and funky. the detroit pads are seriously tripped out and swamped in glitchy beats and stepping hi-hats, and theres some serious low end; its a hell of a track. regis and female are responsible for some of the best uk techno ever made. here they contribute c/chaos; performed live at the orbit in leeds, its simply massive, propelled by downward twisting strings and utterly slamming, intoxicating electronic rhythms. techno luminaries the 65d mavericks are renowned for their driving but innovative techno. "wiretap" is well up to their high standards."
